BEAR 1 & 2 Parachute Construction

Pattern being used to cut out
6 violet and 6 white gore panels.

Finished 48 inch diameter parachute.

First and only test of parachute
just before launch of BEAR-1.
Thanks to my wife, Sylvia, VE6BWF, for her time and patience in sewing the parachute that performed better than expected after what we discovered. Balloon track predicted the parachute would land the 2.0 lb BEAR-1 payload at 10 mph and data shows it landed at about 12 mph even though the weight was actually 4.1 lbs, more than twice what we planned, from the 79%, or 2.1 lbs, of the balloon's remains that became tangled up in the parachute lines and came down with the payload.
